The Impact of Northwest Education Services:

Northwest Education Services is an Intermediate School District (ISD) defined as a government agency that assists local school districts in providing education programs and services to the county or counties it serves

This summer, the Discovery Center launched a new program to provide free recreational opportunities to underserved youth. One of the excursions provided 50 students from Northwest Education Services with a fee free sailing excursion with our for-profit partner, Traverse Tall Ship Company. Even though most of the students were lifelong residents of the region, only four had ever been on a boat—whether sail, motor, or human powered—before. This outing underscores the need to offer free Great Lakes experiences targeted to underprivileged youth as they are often unintentionally excluded from these activities due to financial barriers.
