The Impact of Northwestern Michigan College:

Once our Pier improvements are in place, Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) plans to use the lawn and seasonal pavilion to hold College for Kids and Community Extended Education classes. NMC’s Water Studies Institute has expressed interest in using the Pier and marina basin as an additional onshore site for their underwater ROV, marine mapping, and hydrographic surveying classes.

We are also partnering with NMC on a “Discover the Bay” series of public tours. On board the Discovery tour boat, students from NMC’s Water Studies Institute will explore shipwrecks of West Grand Traverse Bay using underwater remote operated vehicles while passengers view the shipwrecks on large screen televisions onboard with real-time narration. These partnerships will educate the community about the maritime history of our region while introducing and inspiring tomorrow’s workforce about academic programs at NMC and career paths in marine technology.
